Introduction

Kevin’s Story

I did not fit into the ordinary school mould. This everyday struggle did little for my self-esteem. As time went by however, I discovered that I loved building and making things with my hands, and I was really good at it as well. When it came to creating things, be it out of wood, steel or other resources, it came so naturally to me. I believe I found my niche through my hands.

I worked for a while at a remedial school teaching children woodwork. I began with 7 students and ended up with 50. Before we started classes, these children appeared quite defeated but after a few lessons of woodwork, I noticed an interesting change. Each time they completed a project, I could see a sense of pride in each one of them. Their self confidence began to grow and the change for the positive was enormous.

It was about this time that the SLC idea first entered my head. I felt I wanted to create an opportunity for children to explore their individual strengths and skills and bring out their hidden talents. My vision is to see these children broaden their horizons and discover the endless possibilities that they can accomplish by working with their hands.

Be it through woodwork, baking and cooking, arts and crafts, let SLC help build our future generations.
